Although most of my work is family and newborn photography, I sometimes get asked to do other kinds of work, and I love it! It might be aerial photography or product photography, but I find that having a little bit of variety is refreshing and it gives me new ideas for my family and newborn work. For example, after I began flying my drone, I noticed that I started taking more family and newborn photos from a “top down” perspective.
When Jill contacted me about taking engagement photos of her and Tom in the West Village, I was excited to do something different. But then it got me thinking — aren’t engagement photos “family photos”? Why do people think of them as a separate genre? Although the dictionary (and society in general) seems to define “family” as parents and their children, I think a “family” is really just a person caring for another person (or pet for that matter). And by that definition, Jill and Tom are already family.
We started out in Jill’s apartment . . .
And then we took a walk around Jill’s neighborhood in the West Village, which is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in NYC. It was 25 degrees outside — got to love NYC in the winter!
But the cold didn’t stop us from having a great time and creating images that look like stills from a rom com 😂
