Hiding From the Monsters — Using Pretend Play to Photograph Kids

My kids have photographer’s child syndrome in a big way. As soon as they see my camera they start yelling “no pictures!” It sucks, because I want to photograph them all the time. My dad was a photographer and I was the same way as a child, so I get it. I try to respect their wishes while still taking enough pictures to capture their different stages. When they’re older, I hope they appreciate it, even if they find it annoying right now.

I have various ways of getting them cooperate, at least for a little bit. This morning, my 2 year old daughter and I played a game where we were “hiding from the monsters.” We ran around the apartment and then climbed into my bed and hid under the sheets. Over and over again. She was having so much fun that she didn’t seem to notice or care that I had my camera with me the whole time.  The bed is in front of a large window so the sheets provided a nice diffuse light. We both had a blast, and she wants to do it again tomorrow. Everybody wins!

Here are some of my favorite shots.

This is such a great idea, and your images are beautiful!

Absolutely love these…especially the black and white one. Just draws me in! I can so relate…but I have two dogs that refuse to look at my camera. The moment I bring it out my boxer looks away and I can’t even get her to look at me with a treat. She had been over photographed, I guess. Lol Love your website!

  3. I love this! Reminds me of my niece so much. She has a love-hate relationship with my camera. Each time I take mine out she reaches for hers.
